 View Video | Korean Adultery Case Description: ANCHOR: Today a South Korean court handed down a suspended prison sentence for adultery to a popular actress. Ok So-ri has been trying to overturn a law that criminalizes extramarital affairs. STORY: Prosecutors have been seeking 18 months in jail for Ok So-ri who admitted to having an affair with a singer. The suburban Seoul court sentenced her to eight months in prison but she avoided jail because the sentence was suspended for two years. A somber Ok tells reporters shes not sure if shes going to appeal out of fear of stirring up even more controversy. On Seoul streets, opinions are mixed on the verdict. [Park Seon-young, Against Punishment]: "I think it's a very private and personal issue and only my country upholds a law that punishes adultery as a crime and I think that comes from a Confuscian idea. Now, I think there's no need for legal punishment and it should be handled as a personal matter." Some say theres a need for some legal measures to protect the marriage. [Lee Ho-joon, Supports Punishment]: "Marriage is the most important promise you can make in life. I think a person who breaks such a promise should be punished by law, by all means." In October, Ok lost a case she had brought to the country's Constitutional Court. It ruled against the actress and said society would be harmed if it overturned the law making it possible to send a person to jail for up to two years for adultery.
