Most Westerners (even scholars) have a very superficial knowledge about Hinduism, so I know Carl Sagan had gone out of his way to find out what he did. The verse he quotes is from the transalation of Rig Veda by Indologist Ralph TH Griffith (1826--1906). Mandala 10, Hymn 129. The full text is available on wikisource. That my (distant) ancestors did not shy away from discussing about the existence of God(s) makes me very respectful of them. That Carl Sagan cared to include it in his famous documentary makes me even more respectful of him. To curious viewers, I do not believe in a personal god (theistic, deistic or otherwise). In fact I will go one step further and claim that when Indians started forming cults around personal gods (and there are many) and those started forming the basis of Indian society, that was when the intellectual sun began to set in that part of the world.
