![]() View Video | Laura Pallas - Ski-Ing In The Snow Description: One of the Record Shack stalwarts, this floorfiller was a High Energy cover of the Invitations' old Northern Soul biggie, but this version became more well known to a much wider audience. Laura was discovered by Edwin Starr, who produced a couple of tracks on her in 1982. I then saw her at Heaven, doing a live gig on a Sunday night, and was hooked, and signed her to Record Shack in 1983 to record this. Rating: 4.65/5 Length: 208 Seconds |

THE VOLCANOS -- GOTTA BE A FALSE ALARM / MOVIN' AND GROOVIN' RECORDSHACK 7" I first heard "False Alarm" somewhen in the early 1990s somewhere at a Northern Soul allnighter... I remember rushing to the deejay to ask for the title of this super-catchy upbeat tune and wanted to have a copy since then. Unfortunately I couldn't find one even though I asked all my dealer contacts (at that time I only had a few). More time passed with no clues or leads and I soon forgot about it. BUT during last year's visit to Manchester's Soul weekender when I was booked to deejay there I encountered a "45rpm Epiphany vision" while spending some hours down in a dealer- friend's cellar. There it was in my hands - in the form of a red 45 on the Harthon label with the title "False Alarm" written on it. I instantly remembered the energy of the tune and played it to a full thumping dancefloor on that very same day during the nighter. Since then the tune has been a constant crowd favourite and 'floorpacker' at our Soul clubs here in Vienna with people dancing their socks off, clapping their hands off and sweating heavily whenever it gets played. This spirited new exposure and great reception at events has predictably pushed up prices right up for the original issue 45. Northern Soul deejay legend Guy Hennigan remembers the record to be played first in UK at Blackpool Mecca in 1974 or at Wigan Casino coming originally out of Val Shivley`s shop or from producer ... ![]() View Video | Carol Jiani - Vanity Description: Another of the 1980s Record Shack classics that people most remember. This song, "Vanity" was originally recorded by Barbara Pennington, who didn't want to release it, because she was determined to get away from High Energy and back to real soul, so we recorded it on Carol, and released it as a single on the Record Shack label. Carol was an outrageous, larger than life, African singer, who moved to Montreal and had a huge hit with "Hit And Run Lover". For those who love facts and minutae, her real name is Uchena Ikejiani. She then moved to England and signed to Record Shack to record "Vanity". After that I got her a deal with MCA records, and we released "Such A Joy Honey". Her next song, "Turning My Back And Walking Away", was to have been her second single for MCA, and was indeed recorded for them. But my old friend there, Dave Ambrose, left the company and Carol was dropped, and rather than be forced to release the single, they gave it back to us, so I rushed it out on the Nightmare Records label. After that, we ended up doing a whole album, "The Best Of Carol Jiani" for Hot Records in Miami, and we re-recorded "Hit And Run Lover" as well as a great version of the Dells' old soul classic, "Make Sure You Have Someone Who Loves You". Carol is a true Diva, she is still performing to this day, and we just made a brand new recording together, a version of France Joli's "Come To Me". But here's her one release on the Record Shack label, the classic "Vanity". Rating: 4.4324327/5 Length: 207 Seconds |
![]() View Video | Earlene Bentley - Caught In The Act Description: It always bothered me that, despite having shot a video for "Caught In The Act" for Record Shack, that all the footage got lost. Up till recently, the old video for the song "Point Of No Return", was the only surviving video of Earlene Bentley, outrageous New York Diva, and best friend of Miquel Brown. Earlene's first song for Record Shack, "The Boys Come To Town" was featured in the movie "Police Academy". But "Point Of No Return" saw her in much more mellow soulful form, and very unlike the big Record Shack high energy classics. I have been pestered for months, by all the High Energy fans, to put up videos of her big four twelve inch songs from the Record Shack days, but as "Caught In The Act" was the only one ever filmed, and all that footage is lost forever, and Earlene always refused to revisit her old songs, that always seemed impossible. Now thankfully, the grand diva herself had a change of mind, and here we proudly present for the very first time ever, the magnificent "Caught In The Act". And just think - it only took twenty three years for us to bring it to you. Rating: 4.8431373/5 Length: 235 Seconds |
