We are urging you and our other Colorado legal representatives to voice our opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act. We believe that SOPA will be damaging to freedom of expression and our constitutional first amendment rights. There is already legislature that protects the copyrights of individual entities from being infringed upon. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act allows any and all copyright holders to act against those who have infringed upon their copyrights. This legislature is already effective in stopping piracy by targeting individual infringements. In our opinion, SOPA has a clear goal of targeting the internet platform rather than individuals. We do not believe it is correct for a government of either state or federal proportions to shut down entire websites that are "known" to host copyright-infringing material.
